My XBL connection sucks?

I cant connect to the router in my house, for some reason my connection has been terrible lately. I have an open NAT, but I lag like crap and always get disconnected from XBL. I have 0 bars at times, if it can even find the router..how can I fix this?? This is just now starting to happen btw, it was never really a problem before we moved.
