Can i connect to my wireless router in following condition?

I have a desktop and a laptop.I'm using modem connection to connect with network in desktop.that modem is a wireless router.I'll use internet in my laptop if desktop is turned on.my question is can i make wireless working after i turn off my desktop?is there any way?please tell me how to do this?off my desktop?is there any way?please tell me how to do this?
